TIM CURRY, THE BUTLER DID IT
Updated: 3 days ago
Where the Butler Did it come from?

Tim Curry, a British original, and an unforgettable butler
There are screen butlers we remember for their composure, and then there is Wadsworth.
In Clue, Tim Curry turns the apparently conventional butler into the driving force of a gloriously chaotic murder mystery. The precise delivery, expressive looks and extraordinary physical energy make his performance a joy to watch. His frantic reconstruction of the evening’s events is a masterclass in comic timing, with every movement and breath serving the comedy.
For those of us who have spent our careers in hospitality and private service, there is an extra pleasure in watching him play with the familiar image of the butler: observant, knowledgeable, apparently in control, and carrying rather more secrets than the guests realise.
Clue gives that image a wonderfully mischievous theatrical life. Curry’s career reached far beyond Wadsworth, from the fearless flamboyance of The Rocky Horror Picture Show to the menace of Pennywise, the adventure of Muppet Treasure Island and his distinguished work on stage. That unmistakable voice and complete commitment to a character made him a remarkable British talent.
As we celebrate his life and work, Wadsworth offers a particularly joyful reminder of his gifts. More than forty years after Clue was released, his performance can still make an audience breathless with laughter.
Thank you, Tim Curry, for the characters, the imagination and the sheer pleasure of watching a great performer at work.
